The Cure Girls Took Part In The Ride For Life 2013 Event.

Some days you wake up and think that you are not able to go on in this way. You would like “to get up” but your legs cannot move and they remind you that alone you cannot do it.

In those days it is very difficult to find the persistence to say: “I will never give up, I go on to fight!”.

Despite everything and everybody, you try to be strong (because to be strong is the only choice you have) and try to find a way to avoid the fact that other people have to suffer like you because of spinal cord injury and in your heart you hope that  from your efforts, your anger and your pain, something good can be found, for everybody, including yourself.

Ride for Life is for me an example of it.

Ride for Life is a charity sporting event organized by  Riders4Riders Onlus e Marina Romoli Onlus associations and it has been created to help young bikers/cyclists that suffer a SCI and to actively support medical research for a cure of chronic spinal cord injury.

Also this year the Italian Cure Girls, have actively participated in the event that was held on last November 16th and 17th by the South Milano Track in Ottobiano.
Thanks to all bikers/cyclists champions and to all the people that participated to the event, they have been able to raise € 30.000  for spinal cord injury cure. Money raised during the previous editions, have been addressed, thanks to a collaboration with Wings for Life, to the project of prof. Gregoire Courtine by EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fedérale de Lausanne) in Switzerland, a project focused on finding ways to restore sensory and motor functions that have been interrupted due to a spinal cord injury.

In the coming months, the Wings for Life Scientific Committee will be announcing a new competition for 2014 in which researchers can participate with their projects. Next spring the Scientific Committee will be deciding the list of the most deserving projects. The organizers of Ride for Life will choose to assign the amount collected with the 2013 edition. “It takes time –  Marina Romoli Onlus and Riders4Riders Onlus representatives explained – but we want to assign the collected amount to a serious project that can produce concrete results; so in addition to the challenge of fundraising we also have to be meticulous in choosing the projects to be funded. In May we’re visiting the laboratories of Professor Courtine to see how the work is progressing and decide whether to continue to invest in the project we chose last year”.

Ride for LifeWe Cure Girls have met many champions of international motorcycling and cycling, politicians, journalists, young men and women in wheelchairs and lot of ordinary people who were there to support us in our fight for CURE.

The Italian media has given extensive coverage to Ride for Life; there were many articles and reports which have highlighted the aim of Ride for Life and in this way our message has reached the heart of people who unfortunately could not participate in the event. The next edition of Ride for Life will be in November 16, 2014 at the Circuito Internazionale South Milano in Ottobiano.

The Cure Girls would like to thank all those who, even with a little help, have contributed to the excellent success of Ride for Life 2013, but especially those who believe, hope and struggle with us to make sure that one day chronic spinal cord injury become curable!

Ci sono giornate in cui ti  svegli la mattina e pensi  che non ce la fai a continuare così.  Vorresti “alzarti” dal letto ma le tue gambe immobili sono li a ricordarti che da sola non puoi farlo.

In quei giorni è molto difficile trovare la forza dentro di te per riuscire a dire: “Io non mollo, continuerò a lottare!”

Poi però succede che nonostante tutto e tutti, ti fai forza ( perché spesso essere forte è l’unica scelta che hai) e cerchi di trovare un modo per far sì che ciò che è capitato a te non ricapiti ad altri e in cuor tuo speri che dai tuoi sforzi, dalla tua rabbia e dal tuo dolore possa venire fuori qualcosa di positivo per tutti, te compresa.

La manifestazione Ride for life è per me un esempio di tutto questo

Ride for life è una manifestazione sportiva a scopo benefico organizzata dalle associazioni Riders4Riders Onlus e Marina Romoli Onlus, nata per aiutare giovani piloti/ciclisti rimasti paralizzati a causa di una mielolesione e supportare concretamente la ricerca medica di una cura per le lesioni spinali croniche.

Ride for Life - Trofeo AntonelliAnche quest’anno le Cure Girls Italiane hanno partecipato attivamente all’evento tenutosi il 16 e il 17 novembre scorso presso la Pista South Milano di Ottobiano. Lo spettacolo offerto dai campioni e appassionati di ciclismo e motociclismo ha raccolto 30.000 € da destinare alla ricerca di una cura delle lesioni spinali croniche.

Il denaro raccolto nelle precedenti edizioni è stato destinato grazie ad una collaborazione con la fondazione Wings For Life, alle ricerche del prof. Gregoire Courtine presso l’EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fedérale de Lausanne) in Svizzera impegnato nel trovare sistemi per ripristinare funzioni sensoriali e motorie che sono state interrotte a causa di una lesione spinale.

In questi mesi il comitato scientifico di Wings For Life istituirà per il 2014 un nuovo bando di concorso a cui aderiranno i ricercatori interessati con i loro progetti. In primavera il comitato scientifico delibererà la lista dei progetti più meritevoli, tra i quali gli organizzatori di Ride for Life sceglieranno a quale destinare quanto raccolto con l’edizione 2013. «Le tempistiche sono lunghe – hanno spiegato i rappresentati della Marina Romoli Onlus e di Riders4Riders Onlus – ma ci teniamo a destinare quanto raccolto a un progetto serio e che possa produrre dei risultati concreti, quindi oltre al lavoro di raccolta fondi dobbiamo svolgerne uno altrettanto impegnativo e meticoloso per la scelta dei progetti da cofinanziare. A maggio visiteremo i laboratori del prof. Courtine per constatare come stanno procedendo i lavori e decidere se continuare a investire sul progetto che abbiamo scelto l’anno passato».

Ride for LifeNoi Cure Girls abbiamo incontrato tantissimi campioni del motociclismo e del ciclismo internazionale, politici, giornalisti, ragazzi e ragazze in carrozzina e tanta, tantissima gente comune tutti lì a sostenerci in questa nostra battaglia per la CURA.

Nei giorni a seguire i più importanti organi di stampa italiani hanno parlato di Ride for Life, sono stati infatti numerosi gli articoli e i servizi televisivi che hanno messo il luce gli obiettivi di Ride for life e questo ci ha permesso di arrivare con il nostro messaggio anche al cuore delle persone che fisicamente non erano o non potevano purtroppo essere presenti. L’appuntamento con la prossima edizione di Ride for life sarà il 16 novembre 2014 al Circuito Internazionale South Milano di Ottobiano.

Le Cure Girls ringraziano tutti quelli che, anche con il più piccolo aiuto, hanno contribuito all’ottima riuscita di Ride for Life 2013 ma soprattutto quelli che credono, sperano e lottano con noi per far si che un giorno la lesione spinale cronica diventi Curabile!

Ieri noi di Fuoridibici siamo stati alla Pista South Milano – Circuito Internazionale di Ottobiano (PV) dove, in occasione delle finali del Campionato Italiano e International Series Supermoto, era presente lo stand dell’Associazione Marina Romoli Onlus per promuovere Ride For Life 2013, la manifestazione a scopo benefico che avrà luogo il 16 e 17 novembre proprio su questo circuito.

Five years have passed. I remember it like it was today. Seeing her euphoric waking up as if she knew that those were her last steps.

Put on her bikini and fixed her wavy hair that was sun bleached from the beach. She made coffee, woke her friends and explained that it was a beautiful day in May and they should enjoy every sun ray. There would be no more days like that. after that day it would be cold, windy, and cloudy at the beach. That was how she saw the winter. And unbeknownst to her that was how the days would become. Even though the winter was over and spring flourished with the most beautiful colors, in her world everything was translated into black and white. The black from the past that moves away at a speed unjust, detaches from the soul memories without the slightest sense.

Arcobaleno di luciLeaving only a scent of what once was. That one day went. In this body I’m not. I’ll never be. As much as dreams are preserved they try to keep alive part of my essence. There are two lives into one. There are two of me and the biggest challenge in life is dealing with longing for myself. It is the most difficult and most incomprehensible part within a single person. That much I can explain but never understand. Black is the absence of light resting from the mixture of all colors. My rainbow is overshadowed .

I was this: many in one . It was light I wanted. I was in a hurry to live. It now remains white uniting all colors and reflects many light rays but doesn’t absorb any. Showing only it’s maximum clarity : the raw target unknown. Ironically, it has all the colors but can’t be any of them. Be everything and nothing at the same time in the same body. Black, shapeless, and flawed is the most perfect translation of what I was. Today my raw form consists of everything but only reflects what you see in me.

Marina Romoli: I Want To Ride My Bike Again

Marina: I want to ride my bike again!Hello, my name is Marina. Since childhood I have always loved sports and bikes. I was been a professional Marina: I'm a cure girl!cyclist for 4 years but on June 1st,2010 in a split second I lost everything.  I was hit by a car while training on the road. That caused me a spinal cord injury and a severe facial trauma. This accident left me paraplegic and several plastic surgeries have been necessary to repair my facial trauma. I never stopped hoping in a cure that can restore me as I was before. Everyday I undertake an intensive exercise regime but unfortunately, this alone does not cure spinal cord injury.marina romoli onlus

I think that only hope for us is to support medical research to find a cure for Chronic Spinal Cord injury. For that goal I have created a non-profit organization called Marina Romoli Onlus that aims to raise funds for chronic spinal cord injury research.

In my future I don’t see myself sitting in a wheelchair, we must be confident that the science will give us the solution!

The only way for us to get back to a really independent life is a cure for chronic spinal cord injury ! For this I am proud to be a Cure Girl!

Marina: I want to ride my bike again!Ciao a tutti,

Mi chiamo Marina e fin da piccola ho sempre amato lo sport e la bicicletta sopra ogni cosa.

Marina: I'm a cure girl!Ero una ciclista professionista ormai da 4 anni quando, il 1 giugno 2010, un tragico incidente  mi ha portato via tutto. Un auto mi ha tagliato la strada mentre mi allenavo. Ho subito un gravissimo trauma alla colonna vertebrale e uno alla parte destra del viso. Da quel giorno sono paraplegica e sono ancora costretta a sottopormi ad interventi per poter rivedere il mio viso come era prima dell’incidente. Nonostante tutto, non ho mai smesso di sperare di guarire e di poter tornare come prima. Ogni giorno mi impegno in sedute di fisioterapia per tenermi sempre in forma e migliorare, ma purtroppo la lesione spinale non si cura da sola, anzi.

Quindi ho riposto sin da subito gran parte delle mie speranze nella ricerca per unamarina romoli onlus cura creando una onlus che miri a sensibilizzare e a raccogliere fondi per la ricerca sulle lesioni spinali croniche: la Marina Romoli Onlus http://www.marinaromolionlus.org/sito/ .

Nel mio futuro non mi vedo in carrozzina, dobbiamo essere fiduciosi che la ricerca ci darà la soluzione!

L’unico modo per noi di tornare ad avere una vera vita indipendente è una cura per le lesioni spinali croniche! Per questo sono fiera di essere una Cure Girl!

A “CURE” Is What We Need To Make Our Dreams Possible

I was an active sporting girl. I have a twin sister who I did everything with. I loved horses and lived for them. Working with all sorts of different horse disciplines, I fell in love with Polo, a wonderful sport. In 1995 it was just a normal day; we went to work, got our ponies down to the match. The horse I was on reared, exceptionally high and fell over backwards and landed on me. My back broke when I hit the floor, and then the horse stood on my leg and broke that too.

I was taken to the nearest hospital and had metal rods put into my back. I then moved to Stoke Mandeville. This accident left me paraplegic.

I didn’t stop living, I’m doing all I can, I’m married to a wonderful husband, Steve and have an amazing son, Milo who I had after the accident. My husband and son have never seen me walk.

I believe a Cure for spinal cord injury is on the horizon and I think we need to all push for that to come as soon as possible.

My aim is to somehow walk again, to join Steve and Milo on the beach that is just down the lane from the back of our home.
I more than anything want to get married again so I can walk down the aisle.
A cure is what we need to make these dreams possible, so together as Cure Girls we will fight until there is a Chronic Spinal Cord Injury Cure.

Le Cure Girls a Ride For Life 2012

Ride For Life – 18 novembre 2012, Faenza (Italia)

Anche quest’anno gli amici di Riders 4 Riders hanno organizzato Ride For Life,  una meravigliosa e vincente manifestazione benefica giunta già alla sua 3° edizione.

L’obiettivo di questa splendida iniziativa è quello di raccogliere fondi per aiutare piloti rimasti paralizzati a seguito di una lesione al midollo spinale e supportare la ricerca di una cura per le lesioni spinali croniche.

Quest’anno l’evento ha visto anche la partecipazione di grandi nomi del ciclismo italiano grazie alla collaborazione nata tra Riders4Riders e la Marina Romoli Onlus (l’associazione not-profit della nostra Cure Girl Marina).

Marina Romoli Onlus e Riders4Riders hanno lavorato sodo per la buona riuscita dell’evento e la loro collaborazione si è dimostrata vincente. La giornata è stata all’insegna del grande sport e della solidarietà, tutti uniti per sconfiggere la paralisi.
