A CURE TO BE FREE AGAIN

A cure to be free againGoogle Trend says Google users searched for “spinal cord injury” more than ever before or after in October 2004 when Superman, Christopher Reeve, passed away due to complications from his high cervical spinal cord injury.

“It then was in October 2004 that our movement lost its most recognizable face, and our most passionate advocate for a cure. Since then, as technical traders say about a stock chart, the trend is from the “upper left to the lower right. People are searching less and less for the term “spinal cord injury”.”

This is something of a worry. And something that brings a great sadness to me and many others I’m sure. How many of us are in this world who before 2004 and since then have suffered a spinal cord injury and who are searching for a cure, hoping that soon we’ll see a way to have us all back on our feet again.

This trend is bad for all of us. We need to get out there and raise awareness that spinal cord injury doesn’t mean an end to your life. But it also doesn’t mean that you loose hope for a cure. One day this will happen and if we all keep spreading the word, talking to as many people who will listen about our cause then one day this will come.

Just a month before my own accident Christopher Reeve also had a riding accident which left him with considerably more paralysis. But he didn’t give up. He and his wife spent their life time trying to raise money for spinal research.
The cure unfortunately didn’t come soon enough for Christopher but we all need to continue to support research and find the cure for Chronic Spinal Cord Injury.

Being Cure Girls we are trying to spread awareness and show people all over the world that a cure for Chronic Spinal Cord Injury is still something vitally important. This is something we all believe in and we know will one day become reality, if we just keep on fighting. Never giving up.

Therefore when people do searches now, it should trend up and up and up to the right. Because the Cure Girls are now raising awareness and raising funds for spinal research, this is not the end, it’s the beginning. This is something new, but it is something we are building on.

“We were all born to walk not to roll”.

THE SPINAL INJURY IS A FORM OF TORTURE… FIGHT WITH US FOR THE CURE!

On 9 January, the president of the Italian Paralymic Committee, Mr. Luca Pancalli stated on RAI’s (Italian Broadcasting Corporation’s) TG1 that:
“If I could live life again I would include my accident (which left me a quadriplegic). Happiness is wanting exactly what you already have.”
In response to this insulting statement made by a public personality, Ms. Loredana Longo, spokesperson for the Sruotiamoci CURE paralysis movement wrote a letter to Mr. Pancalli condemning his statement as counterproductive to cure research as it falsifies the daily suffering of those living with spinal cord injury.
Under the banner “Chronic spinal cord injury is a form of torture”, Italian cure activists are demanding that RAI give them the right of reply to show the reality of spinal cord injury.
In Ms. Longo’s own words, “To show that aside from living life from a wheelchair, we are forced to urinate from a catheter, use invasive methods to empty our bowels, and are subject to the effects of liver damaging drugs.”
In just two short days Italians have sent over 150 emails to RAI to back up their demands for a right of reply.
You can help them by doing the same.

WE WANT TO FEEL THE SENSE OF TOUCH

WE WANT TO FEEL THE SENSE OF TOUCHJust you try TYING YOUR HANDS AND LEGS UP! Now try to live just one day like this…The main consequence of spinal cord injury is permanent disability or loss of sensation and movement below the site of injury. This is our HELL!!!!

We need our hands and legs to be fully functioning again. We need this in order to regain our life back!

Research for a CURE for CHRONIC Spinal Cord Injury is our priority. Make it happen! HAPPY 2013 from the Cure Girls!

Happy 2013 from The Cure Girls

CURE: The term “cure” means that, after medical treatment, the patient no longer has that particular condition anymore.

CHRONIC spinal cord injury: After only a few months ALL injuries are considered chronic (when injury happens and in the very few weeks/months after it is considered acute).

A focus on research that can help to Cure Chronic Spinal Cord Injury should therefore be considered a priority.

Make it happen in 2013!

Happy New Year from the Cure Girls!

Ruth Purves: A Cure Girl Warrior

FREEDOM

Freedom to move is one of our most basic human rights – La libertà di muoversi è uno dei principali e basilari diritti umani

Hello, I’m Ruth and I’m most definitely a Cure Girl, not a ‘Push Girl’.  In 2009, I brokeRUTH my neck in an accident and have been paralysed from the chest down since. I cannot balance as I have no trunk muscles and have no use of my hands or fingers. I am dependent on others for almost all aspects of my survival.

Prior to my accident, I was working in Afghanistan as a humanitarian aid worker.  I have a master’s degree in Disaster Management and have worked in conflict and disaster zones all over the world. My career was demanding, challenging and occasionally rewarding.

Ruth in AfghanistanWhen not working, I enjoyed travelling and exploring new cultures. I was and still am a positive and energetic person. However, living trapped in a body that doesn’t work is incredibly frustrating and sad.

Like everyone else who becomes paralysed, I did not choose this life.  The only choice I have left is a simple one: choose to accept being paralysed or choose to do something about it. I’m choosing to do something about it.

We are at an exciting point in human history where regenerative medicine is about to become a reality. Pre-clinical research and clinical trials and are taking place like never before. However, to ensure that chronic spinal cord injury becomes curable, there’s still a lot to do. The more people who come forward to support a cure, the better. We need a collective voice saying loud and clear that paralysis is not acceptable.

Freedom to move is one of our most basic human rights and to be paralysed is to be alienated from one’s most fundamental sense of self.

Together with a dedicated team of international cure advocates, I campaign for a cure for chronic SCI. We support and question scientists, lobby organisations and ensure that chronic SCI is always on the agenda. I also organise local fundraising initiatives to support clinical trials that are already underway.

As well as campaigning for a cure, I also undertake an intensive exercise regime toRuth exercising ensure that when a cure therapy becomes available, my body is ready. It’s an unrewarding task and it consumes most of my energy but I’m determined to recover and believe that a healthy body will be easier to cure.

I want my life back.  I want to be well; to be free; to move.  I’m not a Push Girl; I’m a Cure Girl Warrior.
