Cure Girl Lolly At The Spinal Research Reception Evening

On 7th September 2012 I attended The Spinal Research Reception Evening at Kings College, London. I attend this every year as I think it’s extremely important to keep updated with what’s new on the research front.

Dr. Mark Bacon who is the Director of Research, did a talk on The Future of Chronic Spinal Cord Injury Repair – A Focus on Chondroitinaise.  Programme: http://www.spinal-research.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Programme.pdf

Chondroitinaise is a bacterial enzyme which is able to digest scar tissue that impedes nerve regeneration and stifles changes needed for effective rehabilitation. Researchers are currently looking to modify this enzyme into a form that is safe for use in humans so that it can be taken into clinical trials. This has already shown fantastic results in which treated animal models have reduced scarring, preserved nerve function in the injury zone and demonstrated better recovery of normal movements. This treatment holds great promise and has generated much excitement in the scientific community.

There were also lab tours and a talk by Dan Eley who is the face of Spinal Research. Dan spoke about life after spinal cord injury and also the importance of physiotherapy. Keeping the body as fit and healthy as possible is imperative to be ready for a reversal for paralysis.
It was great to meet Dr. Mark Bacon at the end of the evening to thank him for his hard work into finding a cure for us and also telling him about our CURE GIRLS BLOG.

La nostra Cure Girl Lolly al Meeting di Spinal Research

Il 7 settembre 2012 ho partecipato al Meeting di Spinal Research tenutosi al Kings College di Londra. Ci partecipo ogni anno perché penso che sia molto importante mantenersi sempre aggiornati sulle novità relative alla ricerca.
Il Dr. Mark Bacon ha relazionato su: Il futuro della riparazione delle lesioni spinali croniche in particolar modo focalizzandosi sul ruolo che potrebbe giocare il chondroitinaise. (Programma della serata: http://www.spinal-research.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Programme.pdf)

Il Chondroitinaise è un enzima batterico che è in grado di digerire il tessuto cicatriziale, quello che impedisce la rigenerazione del nervo e soffoca le attività necessarie per una sua efficace ricostruzione. Molti ricercatori stanno cercando il modo per modificare questo enzima in una forma sicura per l’uso sull’uomo cioè in  modo che possa essere utilizzato in studi clinici. Si sono già ottenuti fantastici risultati in modelli animali dove si è costatata una netta riduzione della cicatrice, la conservazione della funzione del nervo nella zona della lesione e un miglior recupero dei normali movimenti. Questo trattamento rappresenta una grande promessa e ha generato molta eccitazione nella comunità scientifica.

Ci sono state anche visite di laboratorio e un intervento di Dan Eley, che è il volto di Spinal Research. Dan ha parlato di vita dopo la lesione e anche dell’importanza della fisioterapia. Mantenere il corpo in forma e il più sano possibile è indispensabile per essere pronti quando ci sarà una cura.

Alla fine della serata è stato bello incontrare il Dottor Mark Bacon e ringraziarlo per il duro lavoro svolto per trovare una cura utile a noi mielolesi, inoltre ne ho approfittato per parlargli del Blog delle Cure Girls.

E’ essenziale raccogliere fondi in modo che i ricercatori possano continuare con queste importantissime sperimentazioni.
